Digitimes Research: HTC sees 1Q13 shipments fall sequentially

In the first quarter of 2013, Taiwan-based smartphone brand HTC reported falling shipments compared to the fourth quarter of 2012 due to lack of key components causing shipment delays of popular models such as HTC Butterfly and Droid DNA. In addition, to prepare for the launch of its flagship smartphone, HTC One, the firm purposely lowered inventory levels of many existing models in the distribution channel.

The first quarter is the traditional low season for handset ODM firms as shipments of new models are expected to begin at the second quarter. Therefore, overall shipments in the first quarter showed a significant decrease compared to the fourth quarter of 2012, according to Digitimes Research.

Overall, first quarter handset shipments showed an on-quarter decrease of over 18% and an on-year decrease of over 24%. Among the top-five firms ranked by shipments, only Arima Communications reported growth in first-quarter shipments. In addition, the percentage of shipments from HTC among total handset shipments in Taiwan in the first quarter was a record low since 2011.
